Jan 03, 2017 · Crossing islands are raised areas placed in the center of the street at intersections or mid-block pedestrian crossings to protect pedestrians and bicyclists from moving traffic. At unsignalized locations, crossing islands allow pedestrians to wait for an acceptable gap in traffic before completing the street crossing. Design Standards
