The first step is to purchase a replacement distributor cap and rotor kit. Most OEM parts manufacturers sell these two items as a kit, to ensure they are both replaced at the same time. There are also several aftermarket part suppliers that also make kits for specific vehicles.
How do I remove the distributor? To begin removing the distributor, remove this cap. This may or may not require basic tools - some caps have clamps that can be loosened by hand, while others may require screwdrivers or even socket wrenches to unscrew screws and/or bolts holding the cap in place. Remove all wires attached to the distributor.
How long does it take to remove a distributor cap?If your vehicle has a rotor secured with a screw; always use the new screw. According to most service manuals, the job of removing the distributor cap and rotor itself is only about one hour to complete. The most time consuming part of this job will be removing ancillary components that restrict access to the distributor.
What to do if the distributor is out of the engine?Do not crank the engine or move the car in gear while the distributor is out of the engine . If the engine is turned, the timing will have to be reset. Before removing the distributor cap, tag the lead to the cylinder used for timing and mark its position on the distributor body. Make sure that the battery is disconnected.
