A saline lock IV allows a medical provider to administer fluids or medications directly into the vein without having to start a new IV for each medication. When a patient presents to a hospital setting, it's possible that emergency medical treatment is needed.
How long can a saline lock stay in?A saline lock device maintains IV patency for direct access to the venous bloodstream. A saline lock can remain in place for 72 hours before it should be replaced. If not replaced, it will increase the risk of blood clots or infection. How long can a heparin lock stay in? A heparin or saline lock IV device should be replaced every 72 hours.
Where should saline locks be placed?Sometimes if they are placed in the back of the hand, it can make getting into different positions in labor difficult. This is why some women will prefer to have the saline lock placed where they can bend their hands a bit more. Part of this will depend on your preference, and part of this will depend on where your veins are located.
Why did saline locks replace Heparin locks?Saline locks replaced heparin locks in the 1990s because of cost and efficacy and because heparin locks posed a rare but unacceptable risk of heparin-related allergies, esp. heparin-related thrombocytopenia.
