Adding a desktop shortcut, while you shouldn't do it, only adds the original game's exe file, not the no cd cracked file you actually need to run the game, so it wouldn't work anyway. That's why it says not to put a shortcut. However, having put the shortcut, you didn't need to uninstall the game, you just needed to simply delete the shortcut.
