But the atrial septum also can weaken and bulge, creating an aneurysm that causes it to malfunction. An atrial septal aneurysm (ASA) is one cause of stroke, a potentially life-threatening blockage of blood flowing to the brain. It is linked to what are called cryptogenic strokes.
What is atrial septal aneurysm (ASA)?1 Atrial septal aneurysm (ASA) without any other known cardiac abnormality. Table 3. Comparison of Patients With and Without Previous Clinical Events Compatible With Cardiogenic Embolism ASA indicates atrial septal aneurysm; RA, right atrium; and LA, left atrium.
What is an aneurysm of the interatrial septum? An aneurysm of the interatrial septum is an infrequent finding in adult patients. ASA formation may be secondary to raised interatrial pressure gradients, producing a bulging septal shift toward the low-pressure side 1 ; however, it has been also found in patients with normal atrial pressures, 3 suggesting a primary (congenital?) malformation.
What is the risk of a ruptured aneurysm? Some small aneurysms have a low risk of rupture. To determine your risk of rupture, your doctor will ask questions about your symptoms and medical and family history, and check the size, location and appearance of your aneurysm. Your doctor will consider your risk and the risk of treatment to decide whether to monitor or repair the aneurysm.
