Can a HEI distributor coil get hot?One common misconception says the HEI’s coil can get hot, shortening its lifespan since it’s covered. This is not true as an HEI coil generates less heat than a traditional oil-filled “can” coil. Untruth: Since an HEI distributor coil is mounted in the cap and is covered, it can overheat?
Are HEI distributors reliable?However, early HEI distributors proved to be less than reliable in high-performance applications and got a bad reputation. Unfortunately, the units were infamous for not delivering a solid spark at engine speeds above 5,000 rpm.
What is the advance curve for a HEI distributor?Truth: In reality, the advance curve typically found in a stock HEI distributor is not fully advanced until 4,000 to 4,500 rpm, which is very slow. If the camshaft in your engine has a powerband that begins at 2,500 rpm (or below), then your advance curve will not be matched to your camshaft’s power band.
