One common misconception says the HEI’s coil can get hot, shortening its lifespan since it’s covered. This is not true as an HEI coil generates less heat than a traditional oil-filled “can” coil. However, early HEI distributors proved to be less than reliable in high-performance applications and got a bad reputation. Unfortunately, the units were infamous for not delivering a solid spark at engine speeds above 5,000 rpm.What is the advance curve for a HEI distributor?
Truth: In reality, the advance curve typically found in a stock HEI distributor is not fully advanced until 4,000 to 4,500 rpm, which is very slow. If the camshaft in your engine has a powerband that begins at 2,500 rpm (or below), then your advance curve will not be matched to your camshaft’s power band.
