What the Heck is a growth plate?
Growth plates are the areas of soft, flexible cartilage at top and bottom of your fingers, arm bones, leg bones and other long bones. Growth plates create new bone tissue as you grow and, when you stop growing, they ossify, or harden up. The growth plates fuse with the rest of the bone into one piece to become parts of an adult skeleton.
