If vitamin B 12 is lacking, N 5 -methyl FH 4 builds up, and since the enzyme that converts N 5 ,N 10 -methylene FH 4 to N 5 -methyl FH 4 , methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), is irreversible.
